Vagina Morality
On the Stephen Colbert show last week Cate Blanchett jokingly said that her moral compass was located in her vagina. Is this the same as a man being led by his dick? I guess Cate has surrendered the moral high ground now and we don't need to listen to her pontificate anymore. #twothumbsup

Time to crush nasty little egos.
A School offers to change change children's grades so as not to hurt feelings. Even if this isn't true, it has a certain truthiness to it doesn't it? You just know that somewhere out there, there is a group of people that think that this would be a good idea. "My child needs a report card that says that she got straight As or she'll think that she isn't as smart as she thought she was and really she's brilliant." I can see that if you bought into The Secret then this would be a good strategy. It takes faking it until you make it to the next level. We'll fake it so she thinks she made it and then she'll make it for real, or we'll keep faking it and she'll think she's made it for real and that's really the same thing.
Except apparently it isn’t. Studies show that depression and suicide in young people are increasing. How can this be if they are all such beautiful, clever and special flowers? Why are they as fragile as snowflakes in the midday sun, melting into puddles of water? Perhaps, and this is just a guess, it’s because of the dissonance they experience when the real world smashes the illusions that we’ve been encouraging. They meet someone really smart; they realise that their ideas aren’t that original; there is someone else better than them at everything they do. We are all unique, special and different but most of us aren’t exceptional and none of us are exceptional at everything.

We are all unique, special and different but most of us aren’t exceptional and none of us are exceptional at everything.
Which brings me to my title. Would we be better off bringing up our
children by crushing their nasty little egos?
Telling our little flowers that really, they are not that smart or fast and
nobody owes them anything. If they want
to do well they’ll have to study and train and practice. If they want friends they’ll need to be friendly. If they want people to treat them well, then
they should treat others well.
But we can’t crush their dreams; they’ll
blame us for the rest of their lives. “I
wanted to be an astronaut, but my mother told me I wasn’t smart enough, so I
gave up and now I have issues.” Well if
she really isn’t smart enough, she won’t realise that particular dream anyway
and it will be crushed and she will blame you anyway for setting her up to fail. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she’ll ask. “Now my whole self-image is a
lie.”
Of course telling them the truth isn’t necessarily crushing their
dreams, merely pointing out that some dreams are harder to reach than
others. Some require a lot more work and maybe the pay out won’t make the effort worth it. Maybe this dream isn’t worth pursuing. Maybe
there is something more in line with your actual abilities.
It’s a freaky idea, to crush someone’s ego but don’t we all need
to know that we’re not the centre of the universe.

Clementine Ford's Hypocracy
Apparently Clementine Ford is all upset because friends of Damien Little have called him a top bloke. Granted, he committed a murder/suicide which by definition precludes him from being a top bloke, but Ms Ford's reason for getting on her high horse on this issue it's an example of domestic violence by a privileged white man. Melissa Little appears to reject this conclusion and only has words of love and regret for Damien. Damien was clearly in a bad place where he could find nothing worth living for.
This is the real sin of the suicide; ingratitude. Ingratitude for sunsets, flowers, children, wives, friends, life, everything.
Which all has me in agreement with Ms Ford. Damien Little was not a top bloke at this point in his life. He killed himself. He killed his children. But who is Ms Ford to talk? She has gone on the record several times to publicize the fact that she has killed two of her own children because they were an inconvenience to her. She rationalized this by pointing out that they were only the size of a tooth at the time and really just a bunch of cells; as are we all, Ms Ford. As are we all.
Clearly Damien Little had fallen into despair at the time of his and his children's death. Is that what happened to Ms Ford as well? If so, you'd expect a little more sympathy.

Taking a Sickie
Tuesday, January 26 is Australia Day and a public holiday. Consequently many are thinking of chucking a sickie to get an extra long weekend. It is after all, only one day; real work doesn't begin until after Australia Day; everyone else is doing it.
Absenteeism costs $32.5 billion a year but that isn't really the reason why you shouldn't take a sickie. The reason is it's wrong. It is lying. It is stealing. It is fraudulent. Taking one means that actually, you're not a good person.

Castro and the Pope: A match made in Heaven?
According to the Washington Post Cuban President Raul Castro considers Pope Francis so impressive that he may return to the Church. This would be an impressive achievement by the Pontiff; the conversion of a godless heathen. Castro's quote in the Post however is not so hopeful, "If the Pope continues this way, I will go back to praying and go back to the Church and I am not joking." This suggests that it is the Pope's materialist leftist leanings that are impressing Castro rather than his preaching of the Ultimate Truth and Good News.
I hope to be proven wrong on this one and that the Pope indeed affects a conversion and repentance.
St Michael pray for us.

Gluten free art- everything that's wrong in the world.
So for all of those fearing that they'll be hit up by a Jimmy Kimmel vox pop this is gluten. Gluten (from Latin gluten, "glue") is a protein composite found in wheat and related grains, including barley and rye. Gluten gives elasticity to dough, helping it rise and keep its shape and often gives the final product a chewy texture.
It adds the yumminess to bread, pizza, pasta, beer. Some people, and I feel sorry for them, cannot eat gluten or it makes them ill. These people have coeliac disease. There is a test for coeliac disease. If you suspect that you have coeliac disease see your doctor and book a test.
If you don't have coeliac disease then you're just being a look-at-me narcissist (and yes I know that's a tautology) and an illustration of everything that is wrong in the world today. Just like this website.

Flat White Hipsterdom
Apparently the flat white is now the designator du jour of hipsterdom. For perhaps the first time in my life I am cool. My reason for drinking said drink is that I like milky coffee - not too frothy - and the flat white comes in a cup with a handle.
I think my time in the hip light will be short lived however; my preference for a flat white being of a long standing. The hipsters however are a far more fickle lot. I feel sure that even as I write this they have moved on to Blend 43 or to civet digested beans. (I suggest blend 43 - it's cheaper and more retro). A real hipster must always be ahead of the game. I predict also the end of the hipster beard. Everyone has one nowadays; even the men.
Which brings me to the irony of hipsterdom. In a bid to be more individual they have pasted themselves into a corner of what they can wear, where they can shop, where they have hair, which coffee they drink. They are slaves to their own fashion.
